Mage Class Runes and Where to Find Them in SoD

The Runes in Season of Discovery is a new addition that allows players to acquire a mix of new passive and active abilities. With mages specifically, it enriches their performance and even allows them to change their role within the game.

Some runes are completely new, while some encapsulate abilities introduced in subsequent expansions of World of Warcraft. Let’s take a look at all the runes mages have, as well as where to find them.

Season of Discovery Phase 2 Mage Runes

Spellfrost Bolt

Spellfrost Bolt Launches a bolt of spellfrost at the enemy, causing (* 203 / 100) to (* 237 / 100) Spellfrost damage and slowing movement speed by 40% for 9 sec. This spell will be checked against the lower of the target's Frost and Arcane resists and counts as both Frost and Arcane damage.

Where to find:

Travel to Stranglethorn Vale and loot Spell Notes: PELFRB STOLLOTS by killing Skullsplitter Mystic outside of Zul'Gurub at 47, 34. Travel to any of the capital cities and purchase Comprehension Charm from reagent vendors to decipher the notes.

Chronostatic Preservation

Chronostatic Preservation Heals a friendly target for (* 200 / 100) to (* 300 / 100). Fuses Arcane, Fire, and Frost magic to freeze chronomantic energy into a stored state for later use. You can hold this energy for up to 15 sec before it combusts and expires. When unleashed, heals a friendly target for (* 200 / 100) to (* 300 / 100). This spell is considered Arcane, Fire, and Frost for interactions with other spells, talents, and effects.

Where to find:

Collect 3 sets of Partial Spell Notes by having 3-4 mages cool a Scorched mob in Thousand Needles with ice spells such as Frostbolt or Ice Lance:

• Singed Highperch Consort, located around /way 11.2 39.8
• Scorched Screeching Roguefeather, located near the harpy caves on the southern wall, /way 26.6 47.2
• Seared Needles Cougar, located near the Great Lift, /way 24.0 23.6. Cat is caged; you will need to get the key from any Galak Mauler.

Combine these items to receive your rune.

Hot Streak

Hot Streak makes it so that any time you score 2 non-periodic spell criticals in a row using Fireball, Fire Blast, Scorch, or Living Bomb, your next Pyroblast spell cast within 10 sec will be instant cast.

Where to find:

• Travel to Alterac Mountains and kill Syndicate Thief at /way 58.8 67.0 and loot a Singed Note.
• Travel to Blacksmith Forge in Strahnbrad at  /way 60.0 46.4. Use a Fire spell such as Flamestrike on two bellows outside the forge building until they are glowing red and flaming.
• Kill Ancient Fire Elemental that spawns to get the rune.

Frostfire Bolt

Frostfire Bolt Launches a bolt of frostfire at the enemy, causing (* 258 / 100) to (* 300 / 100) Frostfire damage, slowing movement speed by 40% and causing an additional (* 8 / 100 * 3) Frostfire damage over 9 sec. This spell will be checked against the lower of the target's Frost and Fire resists and counts as both Frost and Fire damage.

Where to find:

Obtain Spell Notes: TROFF IRESTBOL drops from Skullsplitter Mystic in Stranglethorn Vale at /way 47 34.

Brain Freeze

Brain Freeze Your Frost damage spells with chilling effects have a 15% chance to cause your next Fireball, Spellfrost Bolt, or Frostfire Bolt spell to be instant cast and cost no mana. Proc chance is 15%

Where to find:

• Travel to Desolace and accept the Highway Robbery quest in Desolace at an Extinguished Campfire at /way 47 54.
• Travel to /way 63 39 and turn the quest in to Bibbly F'utzbuckle. Accept the quest called On the Lam.
• Travel to the inn in Booty Bay. Turn in your quest in Tokal, and pick up Cherry for Your Thoughts?. Buy Cherry Grog. Travel to the next part of your quest: No Honor Among Thieves.
• Travel to Arathi Highlands and find a Rowboat under the bridge at /53 91 on the Arathi Highlands map. Interact with the boat and you will be teleported to the eastern shore.
• Locate Illari Duskfeather and engage her in conversation. She will present two equally hostile dialogue options. Upon selecting one, she will initiate combat. Defeat her in battle, retrieve the dropped bag, and loot Illari's Key. Then, use the key to unlock the Jewel-Encrusted Box and obtain the Rune stored within.

Spell Power

Spell Power Increases the critical strike damage bonus of all spells by 50%.

Where to find:

In order to obtain the Spell Power Rune, you must read 20 out of the 24 books that are scattered across the world. Most of the books you need to read are the same books you need to find for the Icy Veins runes. However, there are also 8 completely new books. The books are:

Missile Barrage

Missile Barrage gives your Arcane Blast a 40% chance, and your Fireball and Frostbolt spells a 20% chance to reduce the channeled duration of your next Arcane Missiles spell by 50%, reduce the mana cost by 100%, and missiles will fire every 0.5 secs. Proc chance is 40%.

Where to find:

• Travel to Deadwind Pass and speak with the Dalaran Agent at /way #1430 52 35 to receive Ariden's Sigil.
• Equip the Sigil and then find and kill seven Dark Rider Elites after using this sigil to reveal them. This will reward you with Dalaran Relics. You will know if Dark Rider is nearby by having a Dark Presence buff. Here is the list with locations of Dark Riders.
• Deadwind Pass: At /way #1430 43 29. Drops Curious Dalaran Relic.
• Duskwood: At /way #1431 23 47. Drops Glittering Dalaran Relic.
• Swamp of Sorrows: At /way #1435 69 28. Drops Odd Dalaran Relic.
• Arathi Highlands: At /way #1417 60 40. Drops Whirring Dalaran Relic.
• Badlands: At /way #1418 58 54. Drops Slippery Dalaran Relic.
• The Barrens: At /way #1413 52 36. Drops Heavy Dalaran Relic.
• Desolace: At /way #1443 65 25). Drops Creepy Dalaran Relic.

After turning in all the runes you will receive a quest called A Service to Dalaran. You will receive a Supply Bag as a reward. The rune is inside.

Mage Runes from Phase 1 of SoD

Phase 1 of SoD has introduced a set of 12 runes for each class that players can unlock. Here is a comprehensive list of all runes accessible to Mages that were added in Phase 1, and will be relevant to players of levels 1 to 25:

Ice Lance

Ice Lance Deals Frost damage and triples damage against Frozen targets. It is unlocked at level 2.

Where to find:

• Human: Obtain via a quest Spell Research from class trainer.
• Gnome: Complete the Spell Research quest from Marryk Nurribit in Dun Morogh.
• Troll: Acquire through the Spell Research quest from Mai'ah in Durotar.
• Undead: Attain through the Spell Research quest from Isabella in Tirisfal.

Burnout

Burnout increases spell critical strike chance by 15% and non-periodic spell critical strikes have an additional mana cost of 1% of base mana.

Where to find:

• Gnome: Drops from Frozen Trogg in Dun Morogh (69 | 58) by using fire spells.
• Human: Drops from Frozen Murloc in Elwynn Forest (77 | 52) using fire spells.
• Troll: Find a Frozen Makrura east of Razor Hill in Durotar (58.6 / 45.6), using fire spells.
• Undead: Drops from Frozen Murloc in Tirisfal (66 | 40) by using fire spells.

Fingers of Frost

Fingers of Frost makes it so chill effects have a 15% chance to grant Fingers of Frost, treats the next 2 spells as if the target were Frozen, and lasts 15 sec.

Where to find:

• Human: Drops from HHogger in Elwynn Forest.
• Troll: Drops from Zalazane on Echo Isles in Durotar (67, 88).
• Gnome: Drops from elite mobs in the west of Dun Morogh (Timber, Mangeclaw, Bjarn, Vagash, or Edan the Howler).
• Undead: Drops from Gillgar in Tirisfal (26 | 48).

Living Flame

Living Flame summons a spellfire flame that moves toward the target and leaves a trail dealing Fire damage every second to nearby enemies. It lasts 20 sec.

Where to find:

• Gnome: Obtain by defeating Frostmane Shadowcaster and Frostmane Seer in Dun Morogh.
• Undead: Acquire by defeating Scarlet Warrior in Tirisfal.
• Human: Receive by defeating Kobold Geomancer in and around the Jasperlode Mine in Elwynn Forest.
• Troll: Obtain by defeating Burning Blade Fanatic in Durotar.

Regeneration

Regeneration heals the target for over 3 sec, and applies Temporal Beacon for 30 sec.

Temporal Beacon:

• Records the subject's space-time position.
• 80% of Arcane damage done by the caster converted to chronomantic healing on each Temporal Beacon target.
• Healing reduced by 50% on self and 80% when damage is done by Arcane Explosion.

Where to find:

• Undead: Drops from Dalaran Apprentice enemies in Silverpine Forest.
• Gnome: Found in a hut on the northern island in Loch Modan.
• Human: Drops from Defias Pillager. enemies in Westfall.
• Troll: In Kolkar's Booty Chest in The Barrens (44.3 | 37.7).

Living Bomb

Living Bomb markes the target to become a Living Bomb and take Fire damage over 12 sec. Explodes after 12 sec or on dispel, dealing Fire damage to enemies within 10 yards.

Where to find:

• Westfall: Obtain Spare Reaper Parts and Elemental Core, combine them into Prototype Engine, use it at Harvest Reaper Prototype, then defeat it to get Living Bomb.
• Loch Modan: Stonesplinter Seer on the northern island until Living Bomb drops.
• Silverpine Forest: Kill Rot Hide Brute on Fenris Isle until you receive A Talking Head. Complete the quest line to get Living Bomb.

Mass Regeneration

Mass Regeneration heals all party members within 15 yards for over 3 sec and applies Temporal Beacon to each target for 15 sec.

Where to find:

Duskwood: Obtain by looting Decrepit Phylactery from Raven Hill Cemetery, using it on the skeleton in the left crypt, defeating Awakened Lich.

Icy Veins

Icy Veins hastens spellcasting, increasing casting speed by 20%, reduces pushback from damaging attacks while casting by 100%, and lasts 20 sec.

• Collect 10 different books scattered throughout the world, depending on your faction.

Arcane Blast

Arcane Blast blasts the target with energy, dealing Arcane damage. Each cast increases damage and healing of other Arcane spells by 15%, mana cost of Arcane Blast increases by 175%, and stacks up to 4 times, lasting 6 sec or until another Arcane spell is cast

Where to find:

• Obtain Naga Manuscript from Wrathtail enemies on Zoram Strand in Ashenvale.
• Find and cast Arcane Explosion on three crystals along Zoram Strand in a specific order within 30 minutes.
• The crystals could be found at these coordinates:

3. /way 13.51, 15.79

Rewind Time

Rewind Time makes it so Temporal Beacon target instantly heals all damage taken over the last 5 seconds. Ineffective on targets without a Temporal Beacon 5 seconds ago.

Where to find:

Complete three level 20 quests, that are acquired from Grizzby in the Inn in Ratchet, Barrens. The quests involve collecting 24x of Fish Oil (from Murlocs and Naga mobs), 20x Dark Iron Ordinance(from Dark Iron Dwarves in Wetlands), and 16x Shredder Turbocharger(crafted by Engineers).

Arcane Surge

Arcane Surge unleashes remaining mana as energy at the target, deals Arcane damage, increased by up to 300% based on remaining mana, and activates 300% increased normal mana regeneration for 8 sec afterward.
