World of Warcraft Forever Priest Class Guide
This World of Warcraft Forever Priest overview walks through everything that changed for the class. It covers the Priest's strengths and weaknesses, the systemic class changes that apply to every spec, how Discipline, Holy, and Shadow each evolved, the talent changes across all three trees, the best professions and gear priorities, and which races make the strongest Priests.
WoW Forever Priest Strengths and Weaknesses
Priest's core strengths are two distinct healing styles plus a competitive Shadow DPS spec, all built on a broad shared toolkit of shields, buffs, dispels, and crowd control, while its main weakness is that every spec runs on the same Mana pool and has to stay efficient across long fights.
Strengths:
- Baseline utility that used to be race-locked: Fear Ward (previously Dwarf-only) and Devouring Plague (previously Undead-only) now belong to every Priest, alongside a baseline Divine Spirit buff
- Two distinct healing styles: Discipline prevents damage with Power Word: Shield and Penance, while Holy reacts to damage with Prayer of Mending and Binding Heal, with Litany of Light rewarding varied spell choice
- Shadow sustains its casting far better: Shadowform cuts Shadow spell Mana costs by 50%, Vampiric Embrace heals the party off Shadow damage, and Shadow Word: Death provides a strong execute window
- A broad shared toolkit: shields, buffs, dispels, and crowd control are available in every spec, and Power Infusion gives dungeon and raid groups a strong throughput cooldown
Weaknesses:
- Mana pressure on longer fights: all three specs run on the same pool, so downranking and careful spell choice become necessary as an encounter drags on
- Limited mobility: Priests have no gap closer or speed boost, so casting positions need to be planned ahead
- Shadowform blocks healing spells, so a Shadow Priest has to leave the form to heal; Shadow also lacks dedicated AoE and leans heavily on wand damage early on
- Cloth-only armor leaves Priests fragile when caught out of position, and the healing specs level noticeably slower solo than Shadow, which is the usual leveling pick
Priest Class Changes in WoW Forever
Priest receives several systemic changes in WoW Forever that apply to every spec, folding a handful of old racial-only tools into the class's baseline kit.
- Fear Ward is now a baseline ability for every Priest, no longer exclusive to Dwarves
- Devouring Plague is now a baseline Shadow damage-over-time spell for every Priest, no longer exclusive to Undead, dealing up to 848 Shadow damage over 24 seconds and able to critically strike
- Divine Spirit is now a baseline Spirit buff learned at level 30 that grants +40 Spirit for 1 hour, instead of a talent
- Shadowform was reworked: it now prevents healing spells specifically rather than all Holy spells, and grants a 10% Shadow damage increase, a 50% reduction to Shadow spell mana cost, a 100% increase to Shadow critical strike damage, and a 15% reduction to physical damage taken
- Shadow Word: Death and Improved Mind Flay are new additions to the Shadow toolkit, while Vampiric Touch is no longer part of it
- Wand Specialization is reduced from 5 ranks to 2, but its damage bonus increased from 5% to 13%
- Gnome becomes a new Alliance race option for Priest, joining Human, Dwarf, and Night Elf; the new Skyborne race cannot play Priest
Priest Specs in WoW Forever
All three Priest specs keep their Classic role, but each gains new tools that round out gaps in its Classic toolkit.
- Discipline shifts toward Penance-based reactive healing alongside proactive shielding, gaining Penance (a 2-second channel that damages an enemy or heals an ally), Divine Aegis (critical heals create a 12-second absorb worth 15% of the healing at max rank), and Soul Warding for Power Word: Shield; Power Infusion now requires Penance and grants a 20% boost for 15 seconds, and Holy Precision and Power in Light open up a Smite-based damage build
- Holy expands into stronger multi-target healing with Prayer of Mending (an instant heal that jumps up to 5 times within 20 yards) and Binding Heal (heals a friendly target and the Priest at the same time, at low threat), while Litany of Light restores Mana equal to up to 10% of a spell's base cost when the previous heal was a different spell, and Spiritual Guidance converts Spirit into healing power
- Shadow adds Improved Mind Flay (+20% damage and +10 yards of range), Devouring Contagion (halves Devouring Plague's mana cost and lets its remaining duration jump to a nearby enemy after a kill), and Early Demise (+30% Shadow Word: Death critical strike chance against targets at or below 20% health), while Shadow Weaving now builds a personal Shadow damage bonus of up to 10% instead of debuffing the enemy
Priest Talents in WoW Forever
The three Priest talent trees keep their Classic layout and point budget, but numerous talents were rebalanced, new talents fill gaps in each tree, and several Classic talents were folded into baseline abilities or removed outright.

Best Priest Profession in WoW Forever
The strongest profession pairing for most Priests is Tailoring and Enchanting, since Tailoring crafts cloth armor and Enchanting both improves that gear and recycles leftover drops.
- Tailoring + Enchanting: crafts Bind on Pickup cloth upgrades while leveling and lets a Priest enchant gear and craft early wands without relying on another crafter
- Alchemy + Herbalism: produces mana potions and buff elixirs, cutting long-term consumable costs for any spec
- Engineering + Mining: the usual PvP pick for control tools and defensive gadgets, and a natural fit for Gnome Priests thanks to their Engineering racial
- First Aid as a secondary profession rounds out the list, giving access to bandages and health potions
Priest Equipment in WoW Forever
Priests wear Cloth armor only and can't use Shields or Relics.

Priest Races in WoW Forever
Priest keeps its Classic race pool of Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Undead, and Troll, and adds Gnome as a new Alliance option, with every race receiving new Priest-specific racials.
- Human (Alliance): Divine Grace is a level 10 instant heal for 131 to 167 that removes Weakened Soul, on a 10-minute cooldown, Feedback adds PvP mana pressure, The Human Spirit adds 5% Spirit, Sword Specialization adds 2% critical strike chance with swords, and Will to Survive and Perception round out its kit
- Dwarf (Alliance): Chastise roots a humanoid target, Desperate Prayer grants an emergency self-heal, Stoneform removes bleeds, poisons, and diseases and reduces physical damage for 8 seconds, and Mace Specialization, Big Game Hunter, and Find Treasure round out its racials
- Night Elf (Alliance): Elune's Light grants 10% critical strike chance for 15 seconds, Elune's Grace raises dodge chance to 50% against melee and ranged attacks, Starshards deals strong Shadow damage on a 30-second cooldown, and Quickness, Shadowmeld, and Wisp Spirit round out its kit
- Gnome (Alliance): Confounding Flash is an AoE confuse affecting up to 5 enemies, Contingency Plan is an emergency ward in the style of Guardian Spirit, Eureka! cuts the cost of the next 3 spells and boosts their damage or healing by 10%, Expansive Mind adds 5% maximum Mana, and Escape Artist grants brief immunity to roots and snares
- Undead (Horde): Cannibalize restores 35% of health and mana over time, Dark Sacrifice converts health into mana over 15 seconds, Will of the Forsaken is now a single-use cleanse on a 2-minute cooldown instead of a permanent immunity, and Touch of the Grave and Touch of Weakness round out its kit
- Troll (Horde): Berserking raises casting and attack speed by 10% for 10 seconds, Rapid Regeneration restores 50% of maximum health over time, Hex of Weakness and Shadowguard add a debilitating curse and a defensive proc, and Beast Slaying and Regeneration carry over
What is the Best Race for Priest
Gnome is the strongest overall Alliance pick for most Priests, since Contingency Plan works as a built-in emergency save, Eureka! and Expansive Mind improve Mana efficiency, and Confounding Flash adds group crowd control, though a few sources rate its real impact lower in testing. Human is the standout for Discipline specifically, because Divine Grace lets the Priest reshield an ally immediately after healing them, while Night Elf is the preferred Shadow pick thanks to Starshards and Elune's Light burst windows. For Horde, Undead leads for most specs: Cannibalize and Dark Sacrifice ease the class's shared Mana pressure, and Dark Sacrifice gives Shadow an extra resource tool. Troll's Berserking is rated higher by some sources for faster casting and lower by others, since haste affects few Priest spells, so Undead is the safer choice.
