No. They retreat when defeated and can be revived with gold. Equipped items stay intact, so you won’t have to worry about losing your favorite ally or gear forever.

Do Mercenaries work better with minion builds in Path of Exile?

They’re allies, not minions – minion damage/health nodes don’t affect them. Instead, they count as 1/2 of a player for the purpose of loot and difficulty modifiers.
